My Writing Process
- Develop a relationship with the client
- Tell me about yourself – your work and your life?
- What inspires you in your work?
- How important/exciting is this piece of work to you?
- What will make achieving this work fun for you?
- Develop a relationship with the work
- What’s the purpose of this work? What do you need to accomplish with this work?
- Who’s the audience?
- What outcomes do you want? I.e., what do you want people to do as a result of reading this? How does this piece of work forward your career/mission?
- What style/tone helps that happen?
- Logistics: length, format, etc.
- Develop a relationship with the topic, if it’s new to me
- Interview the client
- Read books. What has been informing your thinking lately? Who are the gurus of this subject?
- Read articles. Who else is addressing this topic, recently?
- Google the topic
- Develop a macro-map of the topic
- Focus the piece within it
- Write
- Develop an outline, if appropriate
- Get feedback from the client
- Write the first draft
- Get feedback from the client
- Edit and rewrite the second draft
- Get feedback from the client
- Add finishing touches
