Editing is offered in four forms:
- Proofreading: one final edit of a piece of work, checking for typographical, spelling and grammatical errors
- Copy Editing: editing for consistency of style, and evaluating confusing structure and awkward language. Includes proofreading.
- Substantive Editing: a line by line evaluation which might include considerable reorganization and rewriting. It involves an examination of the basic elements of manuscript structure; pacing, voice, tone and subtext; a check for redundancies repetition of phrases, clichés, misplaced modifiers, shifts in agreement, organization, flow, and clarity. Includes copy editing and proofreading.
- Developmental editing: this helps you get the words from your mind onto the paper. It involves coaching you in your writing process, and helping you find your written voice.
